Spoon & Ladle is based in Birmingham, Alabama, and today offers soup selections to individuals, restaurants and grocers who seek artisan soup with Southern soul. We slowly layer seasonal, fresh ingredients to craft soups that grace tables with a sense of place. Our from-scratch recipes speak of warmth and balance, and are defined by unexpected blends of fresh, seasonal ingredients and vibrant flavors that are distinctive and memorable. Under the culinary direction of Executive Chef Monty Todd, Spoon & Ladle soups are made in small batches with meticulous care and without compromise.

Monty Todd

was born in Montgomery, Alabama in June of 1961. Raised by his mother, a single parent of four children, he learned at a very young age that if he wanted food that he enjoyed rather than food for food’s sake, he was going to have to take matters into his own hands. He spent summers with his grandparents in a small West Alabama town, tending their large garden and falling in love with food, cooking and the great outdoors. He learned culinary skills from his grandmother, Snowie Hall, who cooked three fabulous meals a day, utilizing fresh ingredients from the garden. She taught Monty her recipes and her techniques….although some were stolen when she wasn’t looking.

Monty cooks for relaxation. He cooks for meditation. He cooks to see the looks on peoples face when they are pleased. Many soup recipes later, he is still cooking to see people’s reaction, and to see just how far his creativity can go.

We prepare a variety of our high quality soups in small batches several times each week. Crafted without added preservatives our soups are available for 7 days from the date they are created…..or while they last!




Shrimp & Crab Gumbo

A classic Cajun favorite with lump crab, shrimp and andouille in our rich homemade roux.

Chicken & Andouille Gumbo 

A hearty classic with smoked chicken and andouille sausage.

Simply Tomato

Tomatoes, onions, and garlic our from scratch tomato stock.

Crawfish Étouffée

Crawfish, vegetables and a blend of crawfish, chicken and beef stocks.

Brunswick Stew 

A down home blend of BBQ and andouille sausage.

She Crab

A decadent blend of crab, cream and crab stock with a touch of sherry.

Red & Black Bean Chili

A favorite to warm your soul with ground sirloin and a blend of red kidney and black beans.

Crab & Corn Chowder

A vibrant combination of crab, bell peppers, mushrooms, potatoes, corn, cilantro and lemon zest in a light corn cob stock.

Shrimp Bisque

Shrimp, sherry, and brandy with a touch of cream.

Lemon, Chicken & Orzo

A complex and brightly flavored soup with chicken, lemon zest and tri-colored orzo in chicken stock.

Old Fashioned Vegetable

A hearty blend of fresh vegetables, tomatoes and vegetable stock

Hearty Beef & Vegetable

Tender steak is cooked with onions, garlic and an array of vegetables added to create a healthy, tasty and hearty soup.

Tomato & Basil

This pairing of tomatoes and basil is simple and flavorful.

Vegetable Chili

A vegetarian twist on our Red & Black Bean Chili.
